Fabio Borini set for Sunderland loan

Liverpool striker Fabio Borini is set for a loan move to Sunderland after the player was spotted arriving at the Black Cats' training ground.

• Randall: Where next for Sunderland?

Borini, 22, joined the Reds from Roma last summer in a deal worth an estimated £10.5 million.

However, after an injury-hit first season and the arrival of a clutch of attackers, including Daniel Sturridge, Iago Aspas and Victor Moses, the Italy international has slipped down the pecking order.

The former Chelsea and Swansea player was not involved at all as Liverpool overcame Manchester United on Sunday, and after starting just five games last year he will now be allowed to move to the Stadium of Light in the pursuit of regular first-team football.

News of Borini’s arrival comes amid further speculation that Stephane Sessegnon’s time at Sunderland could be up.

Sessegnon, 29, was the subject of a bid from Qatari side El Jaish, but it now appears West Bromwich Albion are also keen to test Sunderland’s resolve.

Arrested on suspicion of drink-driving last week, the Benin international was left out of the squad for Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace -- a move that led many to question his future at the club.

Signed by Steve Bruce for £6 million in 2011, Sessegnon has struggled to truly settle on Wearside, and has consistently been linked with an exit from the Stadium of Light.

However, eager to buy rather than sell, Di Canio has so far insisted that the forward is not available.
