Bafetimbi Gomis set for Lyon stay

Lyon outcast Bafetimbi Gomis is set to resume training with the first-team squad after club president Jean-Michel Aulas admitted defeat in his attempts to sell the striker.

Bafetimbi Gomis is hoping to secure a move to St James' Park.
Bafetimbi Gomis looks set to remain with Lyon after a summer of speculation about his future.

With Gomis, 28, having just a year left on his contract, Aulas very publicly pursued a policy of first encouraging and then forcing the France international to leave OL so the seven-time Ligue 1 champions could recoup some of the €15 million fee they paid Saint-Etienne for him in 2009.

The forward was prevented from going on the first-team squad's pre-season training camp in the Alps, and has been keeping fit with the club's reserve side, for whom he has not even played recently for fear of him getting injured and scuppering a potential move.

However, with the striker having reportedly turned down offers from Fenerbahce and Newcastle United, Aulas is resigned to bringing last season's leading scorer back into the club's plans before losing him for free next summer.

"You've got to face up to the facts. There's not an offer Bafe will accept despite the Turks and the English. And OL needs a player like him," Aulas, who has sold OL's other experienced striker, Lisandro Lopez, this summer, tweeted over the weekend. "It was logical Bafe's contract would not run out, but if it's not possible, we don't have time to bring someone in. He'll be our recruit."

The central striking role in Remi Garde's side has been occupied by young French international Alexandre Lacazette since the start of the season. However, following an explosive opening to the campaign which featured four wins in as many games in all competitions, Garde's youthful line-up have now lost their last quartet of competitive outings, scoring just once in that run.
