West Brom sign Morgan Amalfitano

West Bromwich Albion head coach Steve Clarke has completed the first signing of what he hopes will be a busy transfer deadline day, securing the arrival of Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille on loan.

• Evans: Transfer frustration

Clarke had made it clear he was keen to bolster his squad after a disappointing return of one point from the Baggies' opening three Premier League games of the season.

The Albion boss has now secured the services of Amalfitano, a 28-year-old attacking midfielder who has won one cap for France, on a season-long deal with an option for a permanent move worth around £2 million.

Marseille confirmed the transfer of Amalfitano, who has become surplus to requirements at the Stade Velodrome, in a short statement on Monday morning.

The statement said: "Olympique de Marseille announce the loan of Moragan Amalfitano to English club West Bromwich Albion with a purchase option for a permanent transfer."

Clarke told Albion's official website: "I’m delighted to welcome Morgan to the club. He is predominantly a right-sided midfielder who can also operate in a number of other midfield and attacking positions.

“Morgan is a technical player with good quality on the ball. He also has fantastic work-rate and we believe his game is well suited to the Premier League. Morgan’s arrival will increase competition in midfield and add more quality and depth to the squad.”

Albion have also reportedly had a £3.5 million offer for Everton forward Victor Anichebe turned down and are said to be monitoring the situation of Stephane Sessegnon at Sunderland.

Reports suggest the Baggies have made a £6 million offer for Sessegnon, who has been told he can leave the Stadium of Light after falling out with manager Paolo Di Canio.

Clarke has so far not spent a penny in transfer fees this summer and has regularly spoken about the need to make a stellar signing, and the reported offer for Sessegnon would break Albion's transfer record.

"I've spoken at length about the need to bring fresh faces in to the club. I hope there will be some good news for the supporters, we all need good news. Even I need some good news," he said.

"I need some players in forward areas that can give us a bit of quality so we create chances. All the top teams have that through the centre and have pace on the wider areas. Sporting director Richard Garlick and Mark Jenkins, the chief executive, have been working hard to make this club better and more competitive."
