Falcao injury concern for Monaco

Monaco striker Radamel Falcao could be facing a spell on the sidelines after the €64 million summer signing suffered an ankle injury in Sunday's win over Marseille.

Emmanuel Riviere netted Monaco's winner.

Review: Monaco go top

The Colombia international, 27, struck his team's equaliser just after the break -- his third goal in four Ligue 1 games -- before taking a blow to the right ankle in a challenge with OM centre-back Nicolas Nkoulou which forced him off with 27 minutes remaining.

"His ankle is really swollen, but I don't know how serious it is," coach Claudio Ranieri told the media following his team's 2-1 triumph at the Stade Velodrome, which allowed the unbeaten principality club to supplant their opponents atop the Ligue 1 table.

Falcao's departure had a silver lining, though, with his replacement Emmanuel Riviere scoring the winner six minutes after coming off the bench. The 23-year-old former Saint-Etienne and Toulouse forward is currently upstaging his more illustrious strike partner, having taken his individual tally to five goals since the start of the campaign.

He insisted, however, Falcao had made a major contribution to his prodigious and vastly improved goal output.

"Falcao wore out the Marseille defenders, and that allowed me to have space. I just finished off the job," Riviere, who has never scored more than eight goals in a single Ligue 1 term, explained to the press after the game. "I'm confident and I'm working a lot too. I know that my finishing left something to be desired.

"I'm now more focused when it comes to beating the goalkeeper. When I returned for pre-season training, I said to myself that I had to do something in order to get some playing time. I'm improving alongside Falcao.

"For the moment, the language barrier prevents us communicating. I also speak a lot to [club captain Eric] Abidal, who gives me a lot of advice. The coach wants me to fill in in midfield to better prevent them playing their way out, and you could see it's working. My objective remains the same: aim for the France side. It'll be a tough task."
