Tello signs new Barcelona deal

Cristian Tello has signed a new Barcelona contract, finally ending hopes elsewhere he could be tempted away for a fee of only €10 million.

Tello is delighted to have pledged his future to Barcelona.

Tello’s previous deal, signed in December 2012, had contained that buy-out clause, leading to speculation the winger could be picked up as a bargain by interested clubs including Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the Spain international agreed a new deal earlier this month that ties him to the club until the end of the 2017-18 season, and contains a more realistic buyout clause of €25 million.

Pen was then put to paper on the improved contract on Friday morning at Barca’s club offices, with Blaugrana president Sandro Rosell, vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu, director of football Andoni Zubizarreta and Tello’s agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, all present.

Tello told Barca TV afterwards that he was delighted to have committed his future to the Catalan club, and looking forward to featuring more regularly in the first team.

"I am very happy to have renewed,” he said. “It is a dream to be able to stay for so many more years at this club. I hope things remain as good as they are and that I can get to play... I will be taking all the chances the boss gives me and trying to do my best.”

Tello played in 34 first-team games last term, scoring eight goals, and so far this season has one appearance -- as a substitute in the opening day 7-0 Primera Division win over Levante at the Camp Nou.

Asked about the start to the season under new coach Gerardo Martino, which has included Wednesday’s Spanish Supercopa success against Atletico Madrid, Tello said things were going well.

"It is always nice to start with a trophy,” he said. “The team is playing well. We are strong and know what a tough season we have ahead of us.”

Tello’s fellow La Masia graduate Sergio Busquets also signed a new contract this week, tying him to the club until the end of the 2017-18 season, with the option to one season more.
