David Moyes: I can't guarantee deals

David Moyes is expecting a busy few last few days of the transfer window but admitted he is not certain that Manchester United will finally manage to make a major signing.

Okwonga: Evra vs. Baines

Uruguayan youngster Guillermo Varela remains the only player brought to Old Trafford by the Scot, who has abandoned his attempt to buy Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and seen bids for Everton duo Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini rejected.

However, Moyes is optimistic he will be able to add to his squad before the 11pm deadline on September 2.

"I don't know how busy it's going to be but it's a busy football market," he told reporters. "It might be busy in the next few days and I hope we do a little bit of business, but I couldn't guarantee that."

There have been reports United have bid for Ander Herrera, but Athletic Bilbao have in any case said they are unwilling to negotiate and that any interested party must meet the midfielder’s €36 million release clause.

Asked about Herrera, Moyes replied: "I wouldn't disclose any names, just let the clubs deal with it and we'll try and do it on a professional manner."

Moyes is pleased that the summer-long saga of Wayne Rooney’s future appears to have been resolved after the forward refused to respond to Jose Mourinho’s 48-hour ultimatum to publicly declare he wanted to join Chelsea and the Portuguese signed striker Samuel Eto’o instead.

However, the former Everton boss was reluctant to elaborate, instead underlining the fact that he had always insisted Rooney was not for sale.

"We told you and everybody else from day one [our stance], so I don't think there's anything else to add,” he said.

Rooney earned plaudits for his performance when he made his first start of the season in Monday’s 0-0 draw against Chelsea, and Moyes believes he is in the right condition to carry on that fine form when United go to Liverpool on Sunday.

He added: "Wayne Rooney has been a great player for many years for Manchester United. He was an up-and-coming great player as a young boy at Everton and his career has gone the way that people expected it to go.

"I felt he played very well the other night and he's looking in good condition and is mentally in good shape, too. We'll do everything we possibly can to keep that going and need him to keep performing well. At the moment, he's in good shape."
