Joleon Lescott eyes new contract

Joleon Lescott says he is determined to earn a new deal with Manchester City.

The England international has entered the final season of the five-year contract he signed when he joined from Everton for £22 million in 2009.

And the centre-back said he would sign an extended deal without a moment’s hesitation if City offered him one.

He told the club’s official website: “Nothing would please me more than to sign an extension. If those negotiations ever happen, I will be there with my pen, ready to sign.”

Lescott has made 138 appearances in his four seasons at the Etihad Stadium but lost his place in the team to Matija Nastasic last season.

However, with City’s other central defenders suffering injuries, the 31-year-old has started both Premier League games so far under new manager Manuel Pellegrini.

And the former Wolves player said he has no regrets about joining the club, despite the difficulty of getting into the team and the stress of trying to secure a new contract.

“Most of my City career there has been pressure put on by speculation about the club buying a centre-half,” he said. “It may be a little bit more pressure due to the fact it is my last year but I'm using that as an exciting challenge.

“I have expressed that I want to stay and be a part of the future but if it is not to be, I will walk away from the club with my head held high and no regrets.”
