Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou has confirmed he is "interested" in signing William Gallas as the club's marquee player.
Gallas is a free agent after being released by Tottenham this summer and his agent Pierre Frelot told SBS earlier in the week that Australia is one of the options being considered by the Frenchman.
Although Victory sources revealed on Wednesday that the club have made no approach for Gallas, Postecoglou insists he is excited by the links.
"I think with players like William Gallas you can never say whether you are close or not," he said. "Would we be interested? Yes, of course. We've got a marquee spot to fill before the season and it's got to be the right fit for us."
Although it is widely believed Victory are in the hunt for a midfielder after releasing Argentinean Marcos Flores, Postecoglou admits he is also looking to bolster his defensive stocks and is impressed by Gallas' leadership qualities.
"We've got a really young group and part of what I'm looking for in a marquee player is some real experience and some leadership as well," he added. "I'm really happy with our front half of our team and the marquee player will be a midfielder or a central defender."
Crystal Palace are also in the frame to sign Gallas but coach Ian Holloway said they are "a long way off a deal".
