Allegri resignation claims 'a joke'

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani insists coach Massimiliano Allegri's comments that he is considering resigning from the club were "a joke".

Allegri has cited the media pressure as a reason behind his decision.

Allegri made a startling revelation after his side progressed to the Champions League proper with a 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven, claiming he is seriously considering resigning from his post on Thursday.

The 46-year-old appeared disgruntled as he addressed the media following the match and he revealed that he has been affected by speculation over his future and could step down from his position.

"For a couple of years this has been going on, so maybe I'll resign tomorrow morning. I'll think it over tonight," he told Sport Mediaset. "I am a little annoyed tonight, as I read things that have been written and believe people need to be more objective.

"There is pontificating from the outside. There should be respect for other people's work, but I enjoy this, as I am pig-headed. I am satisfied with the performance, but very angry tonight. I am very angry -- fortunately occasionally we win a game and the lads allow me to have some fun too.

"They are trying to make me angry from the outside; it doesn't work. From the inside there is a good rapport with the general manager, the players and the club. Still some like to write rubbish, so when I read this pontificating about what they'd do -- fine, come and take my place on the bench and see if you can get the results I have."

But following the press conference, Galliano was forced to inform the media that there was no truth to Allegri's quotes.

"I can assure you it was a joke and he sent me here to inform you of that," Galliano told Mediaset Premium. "Let's not create controversy out of a joke."

Allegri then suggested to Sky Sport Italia that his antics were a jibe at the media.

"Seeing as other people have fun making stuff up, I thought I'd have a go," he said.

Allegri had little to say on the match itself, but insists it is an achievement to get past PSV.

"We went through the qualifying round and will play the Champions League, so tonight we concluded the comeback that we started in Serie A in January," he added. "The lads fought hard, though PSV are a good team with great technique and we struggled at the start of the second half. There was some tension and anxiety, but the lads defended well and we only ran a few risks after the break."
