Wakaso Mubarak set to join Rubin

Espanyol have confirmed that midfielder Wakaso Mubarak is to join Rubin Kazan, subject to a medical.

Ghana international Wakaso Mubarak is heading to Russia.

Wakaso, who had been linked with Premier League clubs including Swansea and Everton earlier in the transfer window, had been offered a new contract by Espanyol president Joan Collet but has decided to join the Russian club for a reported €6 million fee.

Espanyol’s statement said the move was agreed on Wednesday but is subject to the player passing a medical in the coming days.

The Ghana international, 23, has already said goodbye to Espanyol’s supporters via the club website, asking them to understand that the offer from Rubin had been too good to turn down.

“I want to beg the pardon of the club, its players and the fans because I have asked to leave even though they did not want me to,” Wakaso said. “It was an opportunity for my future. When I received the offer, I called the president many times so he would accept it. It was important for me. I want to thank the club, the fans, the coaches and the players. I have learned a lot here, and improved a lot."

Former Ashanti Gold, Elche and Villarreal playmaker Wakaso showed flashes of his undoubted talent while making 27 appearances for Espanyol last term, but he scored just three times while picking up 17 yellow and two red cards during those games. The club statement announcing his departure pointed out that he missed Espanyol’s opening two games of the current campaign due to a suspension overhanging from last term.

Mundo Deportivo has reported that Villarreal will receive 25% of the transfer fee, with the taxman also getting a chunk due to a previous agreement with heavily indebted Espanyol.
