Schalke poised for Aogo deal

After qualifying for the Champions League group stages with a 3-2 win at PAOK Salonika on Tuesday, Schalke are set to sign Hamburg’s Dennis Aogo.

Hamburg's Dennis Aogo is set for a move to Schalke.
Aogo is undergoing a medical at Schalke.

Bild reported that, with Hamburg trying to cut their wage bill, the 26-year-old Germany left-back was likely to be allowed to leave, and Schalke said on their official Twitter account that he would undergo a medical on Wednesday.

The paper said Aogo would move to Schalke on a one-year loan deal, taking his €3 million salary off the Hamburg wage bill, but Schalke general manger Horst Heldt said: “We only comment when we have something to announce.”

According to Sky Sports, the deal is set to be announced on Thursday. They also reported that Schalke would hold transfer talks with FC Basel midfielder Valentin Stocker, who is also interesting two other clubs.

Ten-man Schalke reached the Champions League group stage despite losing USA international Jermaine Jones to a second booking. At that time, the score was 1-1 -- but Julian Draxler and new signing Adam Szalai made sure Schalke went through 4-3 on aggregate.

On Wednesday, Sport Bild speculated that Schalke could still sell Draxler, 19, who is under contract until 2018 but has a €45.5 million release clause.

The paper said Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City had not given up hope of signing the Germany starlet during the transfer window. It also claimed that, in recent weeks, Schalke had been offered Samuel Eto’o, Ronaldinho and Fabio Quagliarella -- “players for whom Schalke has no money,” it said.
