Ajax reject Toby Alderweireld offer

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has said his club have rejected an Atletico Madrid offer for Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld, AS has reported.

Toby Alderweireld has played over 100 games for Ajax since 2008
Alderweireld has attracted widespread interest this summer.

Alderweireld, 24, has been linked with Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle and Norwich over the summer.

Reports in Spain suggest Atletico are very interested and would immediately sell Martin Demichelis to Manchester City for around €5 million should a deal be done.

Demichelis, 32, only joined them on a free transfer in July, but is thought to like the idea of teaming up again with former Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini at Eastlands.

However, Diego Simeone’s Atletico will have to improve their bid for Alderweireld if they want to persuade Ajax to sell, Overmars said.

"Atletico were in contact this weekend and made an offer,” he explained. “But it was not at the level of a Belgium international -- so it was rejected."

Alderweireld, a cultured defender who is comfortable on the ball, can also play at right-back. He joined Ajax in 2008 and has featured regularly for Belgium during their World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign.
