Mkhitaryan sings Bundesliga's praises

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has told kicker he believes the Bundesliga is on par with the Premier League.

Armenia international Mkhitaryan, 24, became Dortmund’s record signing in early July, joining from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported €27.5 million. He had also been linked with a transfer to the Premier League, with a switch to Liverpool having appeared likely during June.

“Dortmund and Bayern’s Champions League display last season documented the excellent quality of German football,” Mkhitaryan told the magazine. “Aware of that, I opted for BVB and the Bundesliga despite many still claiming the Premier League is the best.”

After picking up the Supercup with a 4-2 pre-season win against Bayern Munich, Mkhitaryan hopes to add more trophies. “The Olympic motto ‘it’s the taking part that counts’ does not apply to BVB in the Bundesliga, or to me,” he said. “That’s not enough. As a footballer, I go onto the pitch to win titles.”

Dortmund attacker Robert Lewandowski, meanwhile, scored his second goal of the season in the 1-0 victory over Bremen on Friday.

The dispute over his future at the club came to an end last week when he said he would give everything to win trophies in what is his last year at the club before a likely move to Bayern Munich next summer.

At the weekend, he told the Sun he had been contacted by Jose Mourinho over a potential move to Chelsea. He said: “Yes, there was a situation like this with Jose Mourinho, but I wouldn’t like to talk about it much. It was a private conversation, so I don’t want to make big things out of it. I can confirm that I spoke with him.

“It is always nice to talk to him, but it is not the first time I had such a situation. A year earlier, I also spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson, and that was definitely a great feeling.”
