Pellegrini wants more goals from Dzeko

Manchester City have been dealt a blow with the news that captain Vincent Kompany has been ruled out for up to a month with a groin injury.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has told striker Edin Dzeko he needs to score more goals ahead of the club’s clash against Cardiff City.

Pellegrini will take his men to Wales on Sunday, hoping to return with three points and keep pace with the table topping duo of Chelsea and Liverpool.

But despite his club claiming a thumping 4-1 win over Newcastle on the opening day of the season, Pellegrini wants to see more goals against the Premier League newcomers, especially from his Bosnia and Herzegovina international.

“I spoke with Dzeko before I arrived here and I told him that he will stay here and now, in this year, he must demonstrate the player Manchester City bought two years ago,” Pellegrini told The Telegraph.

“He played well on Monday but not very, very well because for all the things he did in the last match, he must score. Then he will have played very well indeed.

“Of course he will score goals, he’s scored goals his whole career. We also have other important strikers so we should be in very good shape for goals.”

However, the Chilean has dismissed the notion that City should find an easy victory on Sunday.

"We are not going to make that mistake,” Pellegrini told Sky Sports.

"We know Cardiff are a very difficult team. We know they are at home and are in the first season.

"We will need to play an excellent game without errors to get another three points."

But if City can repeat the performance witnessed against Newcastle, then Pellegrini believes his club would have made the perfect start to the season.

"We are trying to play everywhere the way I think is better for us,” he said.

"We played a very good game in the way I want this team to play.

"It is not only because we scored four goals and we had a clean sheet, but in the way we played - we are a very aggressive team - that is very important to me.

"It is just the beginning but it was a very good start."
