Rio: RVP is no one-season wonder

Rio Ferdinand believes Robin van Persie will carry on scoring goals for several years, saying his team-mate is determined not to go down in history as a Manchester United “one-season wonder”.

• Ferdinand aims dig at Chelsea

Netherlands international Van Persie struck 30 times in his debut campaign for United, helping them win the title and finishing as the Premier League’s top scorer.

He has begun his second season with braces in both the Community Shield win against Wigan and the Premier League victory over Swansea.

Ferdinand told PA Sport: "Robin doesn't want to be remembered as a one-season wonder. He doesn't want people to think about him as just coming here, doing well in that one season but not being able to continue.

“He wants to do it over a number of years. He is on course to be remembered in that way."

Van Persie stayed at Arsenal for eight years, scoring 132 goals, before joining United for £24 million, and defender Ferdinand feels the forward’s professionalism will equip him to succeed throughout his Old Trafford career.

"Robin is not a short-term kind of guy," he added. "It is all long-term for him. There is a thought process behind everything he does. He is a top player."
