Edin Dzeko to hit stride - Pellegrini

His side may have thrashed Newcastle in the Premier League, but Manuel Pellegrini stopped short of saying it was a dream start to his reign at the Etihad Stadium.

Manuel Pellegrini believes Manchester City will finally see the real Edin Dzeko following the striker's man-of-the-match display in Monday's 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

Jolly: City new boys off to a flyer

The Bosnia international has spent the last two-and-a-half seasons at the Etihad Stadium since his £27 million move from Wolfsburg in January 2011.

But he has spent much of the time on the bench, beginning only 16 league games last season and even though he has 40 goals in only 63 starts in his City career, his form has been mixed.

However, whereas Roberto Mancini often dropped Dzeko, new manager Pellegrini was quick to tell the 27-year-old he plays a central part in his plans.

The Chilean has installed Dzeko as the first-choice forward at the Etihad Stadium and believes that is the key to getting the best out of him.

“I am sure we are going to see the Edin Dzeko that Manchester City bought two ago," he said. "I spoke with him the first day I arrived here and I am sure we will see the Dzeko all of you are waiting for.”

Dzeko excelled in Monday's win over Newcastle, despite not scoring, and manager Pellegrini was impressed with his contribution.

“I trust a lot in Edin Dzeko," he added. "It was a pity he didn’t score because he had a lot of chances but he played very well. With the ball we all know he is a very good player but he also played without the ball. He worked a lot on trying to recover the ball in attack and after that, he had three or four important chances and deserved to score a goal.”
