Moyes: RVP's best yet to come

Manchester United manager David Moyes believes Robin van Persie’s desire to boost his modest medal collection will inspire him to a lengthy spell as the club’s leading striker.

Robin van Persie acrobatically puts Manchester United in front at Swansea.
Robin van Persie has carried on his goalscoring form of previous seasons.

Even though Van Persie celebrated his 30th birthday earlier this month, Moyes is convinced his motivation for trophy glory will sustain his quality for a few years yet, after he spent seven barren seasons without a winners medal to his credit at Arsenal.

"I asked the players the other day how many medals had they won," Moyes is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.

"Ryan Giggs had won 13, quite a few of them had won five or six and Robin said he’d only won one. So for me, the challenge is for Robin to keep trying to win medals and I think he’s got it, I think he’s driven to do it.

"He wants to succeed and I’ve been really impressed by him in his training and commitment and in trying to improve himself.

"I’ve got to say at the moment, with the way I’ve seen him, world class is sometimes used quite loosely but I think it’d be hard not to put him in that category that’s for sure.

"We’re talking about his goals, but at Swansea, when he got the ball into him, with his hold up play and how he brought people into the game, that was impressive as well. He has an all-round game and we want to keep supplying him and give him every opportunity to score."

Meanwhile, widespread reports in Tuesday morning’s British newspapers suggest United will launch a fresh bid for Everton pair Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines in the coming days, after their joint bid for the duo was rejected by the Goodison Park club on Monday.
