Chivas names Juan Carlos Ortega

GUADALAJARA – Chivas Guadalajara on Monday hired Juan Carlos Ortega to replace Benjamin Galindo as coach in an effort to stem a 1-1-3 start to the Mexican League season.

Guadalajara on Sunday sacked Galindo five games into the season after losing a home match to Puebla, 4-2. Ortega on Monday resigned from his post as coordinator for the Mexican youth teams.

“Today’s result has been very negative for those who want to see the team do well,” said Te Kloese of the team, which is 1-1-3 and sits in 15th place in the Mexican league. “This was a tough moment but in the end we opted that Benjamin Galindo should no longer be the Chivas coach. Obviously, we have upcoming matches, Tuesday in the Cup (vs. Dorados) and Friday in the league (vs. Queretaro).”

The team’s stellar preseason record created great expectations. Galindo was named in January before the 2013 season start, replacing John Van’t Schip. The Dutch coach was sacked after a lackluster season that saw Chivas finish 17th in the regular season. Ortega played five seasons for Chivas.
