Jedinak impresses as Palace lose in EPL

An eye-catching English Premier League debut from Australian Mile Jedinak failed to prevent Crystal Palace suffering a season-opening 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

Socceroos star Jedinak looked right at home in England's top flight with a strong display in a defensive midfield role as Roberto Soldado's second-half penalty separated the teams at Selhurst Park.

Jedinak was arguably unlucky to miss out on man-of-the-match honours as the Palace captain worked tirelessly for the promoted side and made his presence felt in defence and attack.

The 29-year-old picked up a late yellow card for a deliberate foul and felt the Eagles could take plenty of positives from the performance with a long campaign for survival ahead.

"We made them work for it," the former Central Coast Mariners midfielder said.

"It was good to get the season underway and we gave a good account of ourselves.

"Sometimes we needed to be a little more composed but we got the first one out of the way and the boys know they can do it at this level."

Jedinak was the only Australian to take the field on the opening weekend of the Premier League with Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer an unused substitute for his new club Chelsea, a role he will become accustomed to as No.2 behind Petr Cech.

Australia's Ashes cricket team watched on at Stamford Bridge as Jose Mourinho's side defeated Hull City 2-0 on Sunday.

Robbie Kruse was also left on the bench for his new side Bayer Leverkusen, who beat Stuttgart 1-0 in Germany's Bundesliga.

Former Mariners 'keeper Mat Ryan helped Club Brugge maintain their unbeaten start to the season in a 2-1 win over Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League.

Tommy Oar played 73 minutes as Utrecht were thumped 6-0 by Twente in the Dutch first division.
