Joleon Lescott wants new City deal

Joleon Lescott is determined to earn a new contract at Manchester City as he enters the final season of the five-year deal he signed when he joined from Everton in 2009.

Manchester City season preview

Although the England international lost his place in the team to Matija Nastasic last season, he is eager to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.

"I'm in the last year of my contract now, so I've got to get my head down and try and earn a new one here and remain here,” he told TalkSPORT.

“It's nice to be a part of this club, and it's nice to know that I came at the start when the club were in transition and as they started winning things.”

Nastasic is set to miss the start of the Premier League season with the ankle injury he suffered in the Barclays Asia Trophy.

And although City are interested in signing another central defender, Lescott is likely to start the campaign in new manager Manuel Pellegrini’s team.

He added: “No one likes to see colleagues and fellow professionals get injured, but if it means me starting then great. If he [Pellegrini] does call upon me, then I'd like to say I'd give 100% and do his decision justice.”

City were Premier League champions in 2012, and Lescott believes the pain of losing the title to local rivals United will inspire them in their bid to reclaim the crown.

He said: “It hurts not winning the Premier League, and it probably hurts a little bit more that it was Manchester United that took it from us -- but the determination is still there, and the desire and hunger.

“We were disappointed not to win, and we weren’t too far away. We know that, in certain periods of the season, we didn’t play as well as we can and that’s the thing, consistency throughout the season.”
