Michu unlikely to join Arsenal - Laudrup

Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup has told Arsenal it would take “an absolutely ridiculous bid” to sign Michu and warned his club will not do business late in the window.

It was claimed in the Daily Mail and Daily Express this week that the Gunners, having been frustrated in their attempts to sign the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez, are now considering moves for Michu and Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko.

There appears to be little prospect that Dzeko will be allowed to leave the Etihad Stadium, and Laudrup has now said the Swans have no reason to sell Michu, who contributed 22 goals last season.

"I have not even discussed the idea of Michu leaving with anyone as I am so convinced that he wants to stay here this season," Laudrup said in the South Wales Echo. "I don't want Michu to leave for any amount in the world, but if someone comes in and gives an absolutely ridiculous bid then I can understand if the player or the club say this is way beyond what we could expect in the future."

Even if the Gunners were to make a substantial bid, Laudrup said his club would have to be given time to bring in an adequate replacement.

"Economically this club are very good, and I think if they (Arsenal) came in with a late bid, the reaction from the board and chairman will be 'no' even if the money is ridiculous, because we would not have time to find a replacement who is near enough to the same standard,” he said.

"You could say we got the money, but why be the richest club in the Championship? What is that worth?"

Laudrup said he thought the 27-year-old, who committed to a new deal at the Liberty Stadium in January, might be tempted to play for Barcelona or Real Madrid but suggested he would not look to force a move to Arsenal.

"I spoke to him last season when he extended his contract," he added. "He asked me about my contract and I said: ‘I am going to stay here’. He said: ‘So am I’. You can never say 100% as everybody has a price and a club.

"If Barcelona or Madrid came in for Michu, who is Spanish, well, I think you say there are some trains that only pass once, but I think he will stay here."
