Wolfsburg confident over Luiz Gustavo

Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs has denied claims the Luiz Gustavo transfer is a done deal but told kicker: “The odds are in our favour.”

Luiz Gustavo wants regular football to boost his chances of playing for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.
Luiz Gustavo wants regular football to boost his chances of playing for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.

Gustavo, 26, is surplus to requirements at Bayern Munich and had recently said he would welcome a move to Arsenal, but German newspaper Die Welt then reported that the player was bound for fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

Allofs said the move -- reported to be worth between €15 million and €20 million -- was yet to be finalised but expressed confidence the Brazil international would be joining his side.

“He will leave Bayern and the odds are in our favour,” he told kicker on Thursday afternoon. “I believe his decision is imminent.”

According to kicker, the negotiations were in the final stage but an agreement might not be reached until next week.

Wolfsburg appear to have edged ahead of the other sides vying for his signature -- Napoli and Barcelona were also linked -- due to the presence of Volkswagen chairman Martin Winterkorn on the Bayern board.

Wolfsburg are owned by Volkswagen, and kicker reported on Monday that Winterkorn had negotiated a transfer during Bayern’s trip to Gyor, Hungary, at the weekend. Bild also cited Winterkorn’s influence in the deal, while Die Welt said the transfer to Wolfsburg was to be completed at “Winterkorn’s special request”.

Gustavo is under contract with Bayern until 2015 but he has expressed concern that a failure to secure regular first-team football would hinder his chances of representing Brazil at the World Cup next summer, with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari warning his players that they must perform on a regular basis.
