Striker Smeltz's cancer scare warning

Perth Glory striker Shane Smeltz is urging others to get any suspicious moles on their skin checked after being shaken by a cancer scare.

A melanoma was found on Smeltz's leg during a physiotherapy session earlier this year and the New Zealand international underwent a procedure to have the tumour removed.

Smeltz was given the all-clear on Monday, and turned to Twitter in a bid to promote awareness about the issue.

"I have to sound like a parent now.. & tell everyone to get their skin checked! I never did & was lucky I found a small mole myself." Smeltz wrote.

"If I had of left it things could be different down the track! Go get a check it takes 5min & could be worth it!

Smeltz is contracted to Perth Glory for another year, but will miss the start of the A-League season after undergoing recent surgery on his hip.

The 31-year-old is expected to be out of action until early November, and the A-League's leading goalscorer revealed the hip issue had plagued him for a whole year.

"Basically ever since I was away at the London Olympics with New Zealand last off-season," Smeltz told the club's website.

"That was a really busy period for me and that was when I first noticed that I had an issue with the hip and the groin all down the one side.

"It never really went away and I ended up carrying it all last season.

"I was just managing it and getting through, but worrying about your body week-to- week is obviously not good for your game.

"It got to a stage last season where I had to have a couple of cortisone injections and we never really put our finger on exactly what was causing the problem."
