Transfer Rater: Mertens to Man United

Mamadou Sakho wants to leave PSG

Centre-back Mamadou Sakho is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain this month in an attempt to reclaim a place in the France squad ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Sakho has fallen out of favour at the Parc des Princes.

Sakho, 23, who has a year left on his contract, has fallen behind Thiago Silva, Alex and new signing Marquinhos at the Parc des Princes, and L’Equipe reported that he had decided to leave after being omitted from the France squad to face Belgium on Wednesday.

AC Milan, Liverpool and Monaco have all been linked with the former PSG captain, with Le Parisien reporting that he will now assess interest from the latter two clubs. According to the Paris daily, his advisers spoke to PSG on Friday to find out what kind of transfer fee the club would be seeking.

A regular starter for France in their qualifying campaign, Sakho wants to secure first-team football to ensure he will be involved should Didier Deschamps’ France qualify for Brazil.

Former Saint-Etienne and PSG player Jean-Michel Larque, now a pundit, backed his decision, telling RMC: “The coaches have changed, but Sakho’s situation hasn't -- it has even got worse.

“After a remarkable season three years ago, has he progressed like he should have? For me, no. It reminds me of the case of [Karim] Benzema, who stagnated before moving to Real Madrid. He needs to move.

“But it’s not because he’s going elsewhere that he’ll play. He has to question himself. Maybe he’s not playing because he hasn’t put in the necessary effort.”
