Former Socceroos captain Bob Bignall dies

Former Socceroos captain Bob Bignall has died at the age of 91.

Bignall played eight matches for Australia during the mid 1950s, captaining the side at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.

A member of Football Federation Australia's Hall of Fame, he amassed 424 club appearances over 24 years with the Corrimal Rangers, Woonona, North Shore and South Coast United in NSW.

But his on-field success wasn't limited to the round-ball code.

Bignall also played first-grade rugby league for Corrimal for two seasons in the 1950s, and dabbled in tennis and cricket before retiring to train greyhounds.

Last month, Wollongong-born Bignall was among the 95,000-strong crowd at the MCG when A-League's Melbourne Victory played English Premier League giants Liverpool.

He is survived by his daughter Julie Everingham, grandchildren Luke Everingham, Hayley Everingham and Skye Gray and four great-grandchildren.
