Chelsea to chase Rooney until 'last day'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was full of praise for Cristiano Ronaldo after the midfielder led Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea

Jose Mourinho’s pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will go right down to deadline day with the Chelsea manager admitting the club will continue their chase “until the last day”.

Lythell:  Chelsea must dismiss Barcelona's bid for Luiz

However, the Portuguese manager categorically denied pursued defender David Luiz will leave the club during the summer.

Unsettled striker Rooney has long been rumoured with a move to Chelsea, speculation building that the England international will submit a transfer request to push through a move to London.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have maintained their stance Rooney is not for sale, knocking back a second offer from Chelsea for the 27-year-old.

But after his side fell to his former club, Real Madrid, 3-1 in the US, Mourinho admitted he would continue to fight “the correct way” for a player identified as one Chelsea “would like to have”.

“We are far away so we are not in England to know every detail but we are doing things in the correct way,” Mourinho was reported as saying in the Guardian. “We made the bid and Manchester United have reacted. Let's see what happens. But we can't do more than we are doing now.

“We are doing things legally, making the official bid directly to the club, no interviews or comments or direct relations with the player, no contact, absolutely nothing. We are doing everything in an ethical way, so let's see if things change.

“There is no time limit. We have our squad of strikers. We have identified the player as one we would like to have with us. We have done it in an ethical way and we are going to do that until the last day. And we will see how it comes.”

However, Mourinho quashed rumours that David Luiz was set to depart the club after reports emerged that Spanish champions Barcelona had made a £35 million bid for the Brazil international.

But Mourinho said the Catalan giants were “wasting their time” and should consider moving onto another of their targets.

“It's lost time for them. My advice to them is to go to the second player on their list because they are wasting their time," he said. "We don't want to lose our best players. No chance.”
