James McClean signs for Wigan

Wigan Athletic have snapped up winger James McClean from Sunderland.

James McClean admits he feels guilty for the trouble he has put his managers through in recent years.

McClean, 24, has become new Wigan manager Owen Coyle’s tenth summer signing and is thought to have cost around £2 million.

The Ireland international is the seventh senior player to leave the Stadium of Light since the end of last season as Paolo Di Canio’s clearout at Sunderland continues.

McClean, who has signed a three-year deal at the DW Stadium, told Wigan’s official website: “I'm delighted it's all been completed and I can say I'm a Wigan Athletic player.

“This is a fantastic club and after speaking with the manager I can't wait to meet the rest of the team, start training and hopefully make my debut very soon with the aim of helping us get back to the Premier League."

McClean signed for Sunderland two years ago from Derry City for £350,000 and went on to become a regular in the team after Steve Bruce was replaced by Martin O’Neill as manager.

However, he failed to sustain his early form and only scored twice in 36 league games last season.

Di Canio signed Italy international Emanuele Giaccherini, who can also play on the left wing, last month, leading McClean to become surplus to requirements at the Black Cats.

Since joining Wigan in June, Coyle has also brought in goalkeeper Scott Carson, defenders Leon Barnett, Stephen Crainey, Thomas Rogne, James Perch and Juan Carlos Garcia, midfielder Chris McCann, and forwards Grant Holt and Marc-Antoine Fortune.
