Newcastle 'need another striker'

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has once again stressed the club's need for another striker.

Pardew is hoping to provide more support to Papiss Cisse

In what has been a quiet summer at St James' Park, Pardew completed his first senior signing of the transfer window on Monday, with the loan signing Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers.

Still keen to add numbers, Pardew revealed he is especially eager to supplement his forward line.

"We need more firepower. Even last night we need that other option to Papiss Cisse," he told the Evening Chronicle. "Shola is coming on nicely and Gouff [Yoan Gouffran] is coming on too. We have a nice little pool there now. Hopefully we still have another player to come in, maybe two."

With the club actively pursuing Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis, Tuesday saw a worrying admission from chairman Jean-Michele Aulas. Speaking to L’Equipe 21, Aulas revealed he now feels pessimistic about the chances of finalising a deal with the Magpies for Gomis.

"I am very disappointed that the deal was never finished with Newcastle," he said. "Personally, I am very pessimistic. Someone is pulling the strings behind the scenes. I have filed a complaint for ‘destabilisation’. Things will be settled in front of the appropriate committee.

"It is a complete disservice to Bafe [Bafetimbi Gomis]. He is a player that we respect. It completely flipped over with Newcastle. It was a priority that Bafe should have got what he wanted in terms of salary. For the moment, the situation is blocked.

"On the 30th August, if no solution is reached we will reintegrate Bafe in the squad. We will have to change our approach to Bafe’s situation. Our desire is to settle things positively for everyone involved."

Meanwhile Pardew has also confirmed that new signing Loic Remy is unlikely to be fit to start the opening game of the season against Manchester City.

Finally joining the club on Monday, the 26-year-old is still carrying a calf strain picked up at parent club QPR. Yet despite the disappointing news, the 52-year-old still believes the Frenchman’s arrival has had a positive effect on his side, most notably on the club’s other forwards.

"Remy picked up calf strain before he joined us from QPR," Pardew revealed to the Journal after the 1-1 draw with Rangers. "His chances of starting at Man City are very slim. I think to be fair to the other players he needs to be at their level.

"It’s fortunate Shola’s picked up a bit of form and Yoan Gouffran has looked good so it (Remy’s arrival) sharpens everybody up. I think what Remy brings is a spontaneous kind of finish. He gets all type of goals. I sat and had a meal with him and thought he’d signed six months ago, so it’s a relief. He brings a bigger threat to the goal which you need, especially at home."
