Bayern Munich progress in style

Bayern Munich saw off fourth division Rehden with an emphatic 5-0 win to book their place in the second round of the DFB Pokal.

Thomas Muller grabbed a hat-trick for Pep Guardiola's men, who took the lead through Xherdan Shaqiri and rarely looked in any danger in Osnabruck, Arjen Robben rounding off the rout.

- Schaaf: Pep debut a success

Rehden took the game to their hosts, showing no sign of nerves early on. Bayern soaked up the pressure, however, and took the lead with incision, Shaqiri getting the slightest of touches to Robben's shot on the turn to break the deadlock in the 18th minute.

The floodgates did not open, however, and Alexander Neumann went close to levelling for Rehden before Muller headed in a cross from Rafinha to make it two before the break, shortly after Robben hit the post.

Muller's header grazed the top of the crossbar early in the second half before he was felled inside the penalty area and stepped up to stroke the ball in to make it three.

The Germany international then completed his hat-trick with another header from Robben's corner.

Although the tie was over, Danny Arend nearly managed to claim a personal highlight but he snapped his shot wide of the post with only Manuel Neuer to beat in the 74th minute of an otherwise one-sided tie.

Robben then got the goal he had been threatening to complete the comfortable win.

Elsewhere, Schalke struggled to a 2-0 win at Nottingen with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Leon Goretzka on target for the Royal Blues.

Nottingen hit the woodwork twice before Huntelaar scored against the run of play, with Goretzka settling their nerves with the last kick of the game.

Paderborn defeated third division side Duisburg 3-2 and Union Berlin also made it into the second round, where they could meet city rivals Hertha, thanks to a 2-1 win over Jahn Regensburg.
