Daniel Sturridge set to return

Daniel Sturridge is set to overcome an ankle problem in time to play for Liverpool at Celtic on Saturday, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

Coutinho and Sturridge both made an impact at Anfield after arriving in January

The 23-year-old has not played since suffering the injury during England’s 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on May 29.

Liverpool have always been confident that Sturridge would be fit for their opening Premier League match, which is against Stoke at Anfield on August 17.

And the striker took the latest step towards recovery when he resumed full training on Monday.

Sturridge came through an open training session at Anfield, in front of club members and season-ticket holders.

Rodgers thinks that Wednesday night’s friendly in Norway against Valerenga will come too soon for the former Chelsea forward, but expects him to play in Liverpool’s final pre-season game at Celtic.

The manager told the club's official website: "Thankfully Daniel had his first training session today with the team and I thought he looked very, very sharp.

"He obviously had an injury at the end of the season which set him back, but he’s worked very hard along with the medical guys who have done a great job with him.

"It’s a great testament to him he’s kept himself fit and it was just waiting for the right time to introduce him.

"The game on Wednesday will probably be too much for him so we'll look towards the weekend.

"It’s important he has another good week’s training and it was great to see him back today, because for me he can be one of the top strikers in the Premier League this season."

Luis Suarez also took part in the open session, but rarely acknowledged around 5,000 supporters as they cheered him.

Suarez wants to leave Anfield to join a club in the Champions League, although Liverpool maintain they do not plan to sell him.

Fringe midfielder Jay Spearing, though, could return to Bolton, whose manager Dougie Freedman has confirmed his interest in a deal.

Spearing spent last season on loan at the Championship club, winning their player of the year award.

The 24-year-old played the final six minutes of Steven Gerrard’s testimonial on Saturday, replacing the Liverpool captain as Olympiakos were beaten 2-0 at Anfield.

Blackburn wanted to sign the midfielder, but pulled out of a deal last month because they could not agree personal terms.

Freedman told BBC Radio Manchester: "Jay is a fantastic player, our player of the season, and available. We’ll try our very best to make it happen."
