Leonardo: PSG have world's best attack

Former Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo believes that the French champions possess the best strike force in world football now that Edinson Cavani has joined Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the club.

The Ibrahimovic-Cavani partnership is set to provide plenty of intrigue in the new campaign.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani will lead PSG's attack this season.

The Brazilian was heavily involved in bringing Cavani, 26, to France last month for an estimated fee of €64 million.

Once the Uruguay international had completed his move from Napoli, Leonardo quit PSG in the wake of his 14-month suspension for shoving a referee.

Speaking for the first time since his departure, the former AC Milan and Inter Milan boss told Le Parisien that he had left the club in a very healthy position.

“To have in the same team, the top scorer in Serie A, Cavani, and the top scorer in Ligue 1, Ibrahimovic, is incredible, especially when there are players like Lucas [Moura], [Javier] Pastore, [Jeremy] Menez and [Ezequiel] Lavezzi around them,” Leonardo said. “PSG have the best attack in the world with those six elements.

“I think Cavani and Ibrahimovic complement each other very well. It was my idea to unite them in Paris and I had to insist upon it so that it could become a reality.

"Ibra is big and strong but he’s capable of playing in midfield and creating play. He’s going to drop back and work around Cavani, who will lead the line.

“If you think back to last season, Ibra often dropped back to provide some creativity and we lacked a goalscorer who would be in the box to get on the end of crosses for example.”

Leonardo left PSG shortly after his ban - for barging into Alexandre Castro following a game against Valenciennes on May 5 - was extended until June 30, 2014.

“The suspension that I received was very difficult to accept,” he said. “I think it’s unfair. It was impossible to continue my work in Paris because the ban was not allowing me to do it to 100% of my ability.”

A former PSG player, Leonardo said he departed the club on good terms, while he also tipped new coach Laurent Blanc to be a success.

“PSG is like the other big teams - it’s normal that there might sometimes be problems in the dressing room,” he said. “The top players want to win everything, to play well and to perform in a good atmosphere.

“I don’t think egos or interpersonal skills will be a problem for Laurent Blanc. The team won the title for the first time in 19 years last season and it’s up to him to continue to win. The goal remains to win the Champions League in three or four years.”
