Ronaldo steps back from Mourinho row

Cristiano Ronaldo said he will not get involved in a war of words with his former Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho.

Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Real Madrid remains uncertain

Mourinho took aim at Ronaldo in a recent exclusive ESPN interview in which he said he had only coached one "real" Ronaldo – Brazil's 2002 World Cup-winning centre-forward.

Responding at Madrid's pre-season training camp in Los Angeles on Sunday, Ronaldo cited a Portuguese proverb.

"There are things in life which do not deserve comments," he told ESPN Deportes. "That is something I am not going to talk about for obvious reasons.

"I always respect my coaches and set out to learn from them. In Portugal, people say: 'I do not spit in the meal I am eating.' So that. I prefer to stick to positive things."

The two men come face to face again in the 2013 Guinness International Champions Cup final in Miami on Thursday.

Ronaldo said: "We are going to take on Chelsea, but it is just another game. We are taking on Chelsea, not the manager. We want to win."

Asked about a Marca story claiming he had agreed a new €17 million-a-year deal with Madrid, he said it was too early to comment on his future.

"The situation is not yet sorted, so it is not the right moment to talk about this," he added. "Further on, maybe something more concrete will be known, but at the moment it is just up to me to train and work."

Asked about his thoughts on Real's potential world record signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham, he said: “It is not for me to talk about new players.

"I am very happy with the players that I have in the team. But to speak about figures that are being mentioned is for the coach and the president. I have my opinion, but I am not going to say it in front of the cameras."

But the attacker was more forthcoming about his liking for the new, more central position in which he has been deployed by Carlo Ancelotti during recent friendlies.

"It is a different coach, it is a new position, but I like it," he said. "Carlo gives me the chance to play where I like and where I feel comfortable."
