Loic Remy set for Newcastle medical

Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy is set to undergo a medical at Newcastle ahead of a season-long loan deal, a source close to the Championship club has told ESPN.

Remy, 26, has been a long-term target of the Magpies, and spurned the opportunity to move to St James’ Park in January when he opted to join QPR for £8 million instead.

The news of the France international’s impending move follows on from the Magpies’ director of football, Joe Kinnear, confirming that a deal for the player was close to being completed.

When asked by Sky Sports News if Newcastle were close to signing Remy, the Irishman replied: "Yeah, I think very much so. I would like to think we are very, very close to agreeing that. I would think maybe Monday or Tuesday we will be a position to say yay or nay but I am very happy about how that deal is going at the moment."

Lyon confirmed last week that they had agreed a fee with Newcastle for the transfer of striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

That deal is believed to be taking longer to complete than first expected, but Kinnear has said he is also looking to bring in Aston Villa's Darrent Bent to bolster the club’s frontline for the season.

Fulham appear favourites to land Bent, 29, for around £5 million, but the former Wimbledon boss is not giving up hope of luring the striker to St James' Park after being instructed to do so by manager Alan Pardew.

"We were with Darren's agent for two or three hours; we thrashed out a deal. We are still in negotiations with Aston Villa so there is a really strong possibility there,” he said.

"Again I hear the latest is that somebody else has all of a sudden shown interest in the player. So we have competition from various clubs around the country. But I am not letting go. These are players that me and Alan have spoken about. These are players that we've all agreed at the club are the type of player we want to bring to Newcastle."

Despite the Magpies having only managed to make one signing so far this summer, in teenager Olivier Kemen from Metz, Kinnear was keen to stress that he has been working hard behind the scenes.

"I'm well aware that everyone is concerned [about the lack of transfers] and rightly so but I'm not dragging my heels in any manner," Kinnear said. "I'm being sensible about the budget I have got and am going to spend it as wisely as I can. I keep Alan well informed and have regular meetings."
