No surprises as big guns progress

The first round of the DFB-Pokal reserved no surprises for the Bundesliga sides today as all six top-flight representatives came through their ties unscathed.

Dortmund duo Kevin Grosskreutz and Robert Lewandowski celebrate during the win over Wilhelmshaven.

Freiburg went the closest to capitulating, needing extra time before getting the better of fourth-division hosts Neustrelitz.

Borussia Dortmund also looked a bit rusty against Wilhelmshaven until Kevin Grosskreutz struck 20 minutes from time. Last season's beaten Champions League finalists then went on to win 3-0.

Hoffenheim looked the most in form as they put nine goals past Aumund-Vegesack without reply, although all of the goals fell in the second half.

Heung Min Son scored his first official goal for Bayer Leverkusen in their 6-1 win at Lippstadt, with last season's Bundesliga top-scorer Stefan Kiessling also getting his name on the scoresheet.

Mainz were made to work hard for a 2-1 win at Fortuna Cologne while Wolfsburg saw off Karlsruhe 3-1 with Ivan Perisic, Diego and Marcel Schafer on the scoresheet.

There were no surprises for 2. Bundesliga sides with Kaiserslautern beating Neckarsulm 7-0, Bochum beating Bahlinger 3-1 and Aalen defeating Rosenheim 2-0.

Energie Cottbus ensured the first round of the cup continued true to form with a 1-0 win at Magdeburg with Ingolstadt also beating Baumberg 4-1, meaning Osnabruck's win over Erzgebirge Aue on Friday night remains the only minor upset of the round so far.

There are a further 13 ties to be played on Sunday before the first round is completed on Monday with four games, included holders Bayern Munich's trip to Rehden.

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
