Cavani and Marquinhos to miss out

New signings Edinson Cavani and Marquinhos have not been included in the Paris Saint-Germain squad for the Champions Trophy match against Bordeaux on Saturday.

The traditional curtain raiser for the French season, which pits the Ligue 1 champions against the French Cup winners, will take place in Gabon this weekend.

PSG are due to arrive in Libreville this evening but Cavani, 26, and Marquinhos, 19, will not be on the plane after being left out of a 23-man squad for the match.

Both players only returned to training on Monday, with Brazilian centre back Marquinhos having just recovered from an infection that held up his €35 million move from Roma.

The French champions’ other summer signing, Lucas Digne, is included but midfielder Jeremy Menez is still recovering from a back operation. Uruguayan defender Diego Lugano, wanted by West Bromwich Albion, does not feature.

Le Parisien suggests that one reason for leaving Cavani and Marquinhos behind is that they may not have been vaccinated in time for the trip to Gabon. Some shots are advised to be taken ten days before entering the West African country.

Meanwhile, French Cup winners Bordeaux will travel with a severely depleted line-up. Cheick Diabate, who scored the winner in the cup final, misses out through injury along with Diego Rolan, David Bellion, Julien Faubert and Abdou Traore.

Defenders Henrique, Marc Planus and Jeremie Brechet are all suspended for Saturday’s game, meaning Bordeaux coach Francis Gillot has to make do with a squad of 18 players, three of whom are goalkeepers.

Gillot has, however, bolstered his team ahead of the new season by signing Argentine defender Lucas Orban.

Orban, 24, has signed a four-year contract and will be unveiled on Thursday. Bordeaux are thought to have paid Tigre about €3.5 million for his signature.
