Tottenham agree Soldado deal

Tottenham have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Valencia to sign Roberto Soldado subject to a medical.

Only a medical stands in the way of Roberto Soldado and his move to Spurs
Spain international Soldado is set to undergo a medical at White Hart Lane.

• McMath: La Liga losing its edge

Reports in Valencia sports daily Superdeporte said that the 28-year-old striker is due to undergo a medical on Thursday after signing a contract at 00:30 on Wednesday, enabling a move to White Hart Lane for €30 million.

It is believed the terms of the deal mean Tottenham will make an initial payment of €12 million, with three further payments of €6 million over the next three years. Reports earlier this week had suggested a deal was very close to being struck.

Valencia will now turn their attention to replacing the Spain international striker, with former Spurs player Helder Postiga expected to join from Zaragoza this week.

On their official website the club said: "Valencia Club de Fútbol has reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, pending the corresponding medical examination, for the transfer of Roberto Soldado for the amount equivalent to that of his release clause.

"The Club wishes Roberto the best of luck in this new professional phase and we also wish to point out the professionalism and great performance of the footballer in the matches where he has worn the Valencia Club de Fútbol shirt.

"Given the great magnitude of the transfer, Valencia CF would like to manifest that the operation has gone ahead with great effort from the three parties involved. On one hand, Tottenham Hotspur and the footballer along with his agents, and on the other hand, it has supposed an added effort for Valencia Club de Fútbol which never would have had the intention in releasing Roberto Soldado.

"Lastly, Valencia CF wishes to thank the fans for the support received and at the same time offers a message of confidence in the work put forward by the coaches and players that wish to bring the Club forward and fulfill the objective of continuously maintaining Valencia Club de Fútbol as a great team. The Council and the professionals in the Technical Area will make the corresponding arrangements, in accordance with the economic reality, to maintain and increase the potential of the squad in sync with the level of demand of our great history and of our great supporters."

Soldado, who began his career at Real Madrid, scored 82 goals in 141 appearances for Valencia and hit 24 last season.

Soldado later urged Bale to stay at White Hart Lane so the pair can form a partnership next season.

Speaking to reporters at Valencia airport before boarding a flight to London to undergo his medical, the 28-year-old was quoted as saying by Spanish newspaper AS: "Bale is a great footballer and you can see the effort Tottenham are making to prevent him from leaving. Of course I want him to stay."

The forward also left with a parting shot at Los Che.

"I'm leaving Valencia because I don't trust or believe in this project,'' he said. "I will say it again: I decided to leave the club the moment I lost faith in this project.''
