De Gea: Fabregas a 'great signing'

Xavi Hernandes has welcomed new manager 'Tata' Martino and backed Fabregas to stay at Barcelona this summer

David de Gea has reiterated he is keen for fellow Spaniard Cesc Fabregas to join him at Manchester United as the club prepare to make a third bid for the Barcelona star.

It was reported on Wednesday that United will make an offer of around £40 million to convince Barcelona to sell Fabregas - having already had bids of £26 million and £30 million turned down - despite the Catalans insisting he will not be leaving the Camp Nou.

But De Gea, who backed the arrival of Fabregas last month, believes that the former Arsenal captain is exactly the player United need in order to develop as they aim to retain their Premier League crown.

"Fabregas has to make a decision to stay or come to us. He would be a great signing, and would help us to improve," De Gea said in Marca.

The latest offer being finalised would eclipse United's transfer record fee of £30.8 million they paid to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham five years ago.

Red Devils manager David Moyes has made no secret of the club's interest in Fabregas, although recent reports have claimed he could be ready to look elsewhere - with Real Madrid's Luka Modric linked - if they fail in the pursuit of the midfielder.
