No Reds bid for Papadopoulos
Schalke general manager Horst Heldt has dismissed rumours that Kyriakos Papadopoulos is close to joining Liverpool.
Papadopoulos has been strongly linked with a move to the Reds, who are expected to allow Martin Skrtel to join Napoli, but Heldt told Reviersport on Wednesday: “There is no truth to those rumours. There is no offer for Papadopoulos, either from Liverpool or any other club. The opposite.”
The 21-year-old Greece centre-back returned to training on Tuesday after a knee injury that had sidelined him for over eight months.
“We are delighted that ‘Papa’ is making such progress after his knee injury and he will hopefully be an option for us again soon,” Heldt added. “He is in our plans.”
It is believed that Papadopoulos has a buy-out option in his contract that would allow him to leave for around €20 million to €22 million, but the clause expires at the end of July. Even so, Heldt suggested that bids for the player would still be considered.
“If we receive an offer, we will sit down with a player and make a decision,” he said. “That’s how we handle it with all of our players.”
