Andreas Granqvist eyed by West Brom

Steve Clarke is ready to press ahead with a move for Sweden international Andreas Granqvist after failing in his attempt to sign Argentina defender Federico Fernandez.

Premier League clubs are monitoring Genoa defender Andrea Granqvist's situation
Granqvist, now at Gemoa, made 14 Premier League appearances while at Wigan.

The West Bromwich Albion head coach wants to add more central defensive competition to his squad and sources close to Granqvist claim the 28-year-old is now the subject of interest.

The Genoa centre-back is keen to leave Italian football this summer and has set his sights on a return to England after a spell with Wigan Athletic earlier in his career.

He almost left Genoa in January, with Dynamo Kiev keen to sign him, and the Russian side remain in the running for his signature, along with Premier League rivals Norwich City, who have also made tentative enquiries.

A source close to Granqvist told ESPN: "There has been interest from a number of clubs including West Bromwich Albion and Norwich and we will have to wait and see what happens."

Albion have only made one signing so far this summer with the arrival of Nikolas Anelka and Clarke's squad is short on numbers as he prepares for his second season in charge at The Hawthorns.

Central defence is a priority area, and Clarke has switched his attentions to Granqvist after being refused a 12-month loan deal for Fernandez by Serie A side Napoli, who wanted a permanent deal.

Albion baulked at Napoli's £7 million valuation of the 24-year-old Argentina international because of the tight budget Clarke is operating on during the summer transfer window.

Granqvist, who is an international team-mate of Jonas Olsson, is available for around £2 million, following a two-year stint in Serie A.
