Bolton hopeful despite Jay Spearing cost

Bolton are trying to sign midfielder Jay Spearing from Liverpool but admit the Premier League club’s asking price is too high for them at the moment.

Jay Spearing played 37 Championship games on loan at Bolton last season.
Jay Spearing played 37 Championship games on loan at Bolton last season.

Spearing, 24, spent the 2012-13 campaign on loan at the Reebok Stadium, making 39 appearances and winning Bolton’s Player of the Season award.

And manager Dougie Freedman is keen to bring him back to the Championship club on a permanent basis - if he can afford him.

Talks are ongoing between the two clubs and Wanderers hope Liverpool will allow the Merseysider to move on.

"Jay Spearing is the kind of player I love," Freedman said at a fans' forum. "At the moment, the asking price is too high but we're still trying to do a deal."

Spearing also came close to joining Bolton’s Championship rivals Blackburn earlier this summer but has not featured in a league game for Liverpool since Kenny Dalglish’s sacking in May 2012.

He appeared in three Europa League matches under Brendan Rodgers before being loaned out at the start of last season.

Freedman has already made seven summer signings, including bringing in former Everton striker Jermaine Beckford, Norwich left-back Marc Tierney and Blackpool defender Alex Baptiste.
