Marco Borriello's Roma future in doubt

Marco Borriello’s future as an AS Roma player has been cast in doubt after he was left behind as the Giallorossi embarked on a pre-season tour of the North America.

Roma flew out to the United States on Sunday for a tour which will take in Kansas City, Toronto, Boston and Washington, but Borriello has been left behind to seemingly find a new employer.

Despite impressing in a pre-season friendly for the Giallorossi on Friday, Roma are keen to offload the 31-year-old, one of their biggest earners, from the wage bill since he does not feature in the plans of coach Rudi Garcia.

Genoa, with whom Borriello spent last season on loan, scoring 12 goals in 28 appearances, have made no secret of their desire to sign the former Italy international on a permanent basis, but for that to happen, they need to find a taker for their own top-earner Alberto Gilardino.

A swap deal has been muted, but Roma do not appear keen on taking the Italy international, despite his 13 goals for Bologna last term. That would leave the option of Borriello going out on loan for the tenth time in his career.

An alternative offer could come from Spanish club Malaga, although Roma’s director of sport Walter Sabatini is first expected to sound out Genoa in Milan on Monday evening when the fixtures for the new season are unveiled with all club bosses in attendance.

Meanwhile, the situation is slightly different for Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, who unlike Borriello has travelled to the States with his team-mates. Fulham still appear interested in the Italy international, who Roma are still listening to offers for, albeit without as much insistence as with Borriello.

“Osvaldo is a great striker and there aren’t that many around like him,” Roma coach Rudi Garcia said last week. “He’s got character and talent and I prefer having players like this.”
