New Thiago Silva, Marco Verratti deals

Thiago Silva has joined Marco Verratti in agreeing an improved contract at French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazil international defender, 28, had been a target for Barcelona this summer but he is now set to sign a new deal that will tie him to PSG until 2018.

L’Equipe reports that a €2 million-per-year increase in salary proved enough for the centre back to commit his long-term future to Laurent Blanc’s side.

The final details of the contract were agreed on Saturday, with last season’s club captain now due to earn €12 million per year after tax. The centre-back is expected to sign the deal in mid-August.

PSG’s Qatari owners have been anxious to ward off interest in a player that they signed from AC Milan for €42 million last summer.

According to L’Equipe, PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi met Silva’s agent in Doha at the start of this month to begin negotiations. The player then announced earlier this month that he would stay in the French capital.

As well as an improved basic wage, Silva could also benefit from several performance-based bonuses. In return, his club have received a guarantee that - at the very least - he will not seek to leave Paris in the coming season. 

Silva, who was captain of the Brazil team which won the Confederations Cup in June, will be 33 at the end of the new deal.  

The news comes a day after it emerged that Verratti, 20, had agreed to prolong his stay in the French capital by one year. The Italian midfielder’s agent, Donato Di Campli, confirmed the news on Twitter on Sunday.

Many observers, including Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, believed that Di Campli was using rumoured interest from other clubs to force PSG into offering Verratti improved terms.

 

 

The former Pescara player will see his annual wage increase from €850,000 to over €2 million under the new deal. L’Equipe says the contract, which will also expire in 2018, does not contain a release clause.
