Hoeness 'a stranger at his own party'

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness returned to the spotlight when Bayern took on Barcelona in the Uli Hoeness Cup at the Allianz Arena earlier this week.

Uli Hoeness has seen an offer to resign rejected
Hoeness is likely to face charges over alleged tax evasion.

Hoeness has been under investigation for alleged tax evasion. In January, the 61-year-old filed a voluntary disclosure which showed he had not paid tax on a Swiss bank account.

Earlier this month, it was reported that he could escape imprisonment and instead be sentenced to two years on parole after it emerged that he was likely be charged by the Munich economic and tax criminal chamber after being investigated.

Speaking to ZDF TV on the evening of the Barcelona match, he said: "I am confident there will be a decision within the next two or three months.

"Like 48,000 others Germans, I filed a voluntary disclosure, and wouldn't know why it shouldn't be valid."

The match between Barcelona and Bayern had been arranged in February as a belated celebration of Hoeness's 60th birthday.

But Munich-based paper SZ said the ongoing case had made him "a stranger at his own party".

It added: "But the truth was, the stage was just there, and on it was written his name – 'Uli Hoeness Cup' – and he had to speak.

"He knew that if he refused to speak out in front of the cameras, this would be discussed, back and forth. And so he spoke, but what he said also left room for interpretation and judgments.

"He had imagined that evening completely differently - it should have been a festive evening, with a huge gift basket, meaningful gestures and meaningful words. In the end, all there was left was the gift basket."

All proceedings - €2.5 million – from the match went to charity.
