Schalke hope to keep rising star Julian Draxler at the club beyond 2014, general manager Horst Heldt has told Bild.
Draxler, 19, put pen to paper on a new Schalke deal until 2018 in May, but that contract is reported to include a €45 million release clause.
Earlier this month, the Germany international confirmed he had received offers from Spain and England &mdash Bild Zeitung named those clubs as Real Madrid and Manchester City — but opted to stay to boost his chances of going to the 2014 World Cup.
However, he had previously said it would be a “dream” to play for Madrid, and there has been an expectation that he would move on next year.
Heldt, though, insisted that was not necessarily the case.
“It is definitely possible that Julian will play another season here,” he said on Friday. “He could indeed get even better [next season] and have even more offers, but Schalke also have the potential to develop further. I don’t see that a 2014 switch will automatically happen.”
Heldt said the interest in Draxler had come as a surprise to the club.
“It was certainly pretty tight in June,” he said. “We did not have a Plan B.”
Draxler also said that he had not decided what to do next.
“If I should get offers again next summer, I’ll contemplate the pros and cons again and make a decision,” he added. “I know what I have at Schalke. Everything is possible — maybe even a weaker season.”
On Saturday, Draxler and his Schalke team-mates will welcome Real Madrid legend Raul back to the Schalke Arena in what is to be a farewell match for the striker.
The forward played for Schalke from 2010 to 2012, thrilling the fans with his displays for the Royal Blues before making the switch to Qatar side Al-Sadd Sports in summer 2012.
“When he left the club, I asked him if he could give me his mobile number and email,” Draxler told Der Westen.
“He supported me at Schalke and it was important to me to be able to continue to hear the opinion of such an experienced world-class player. He got in touch with me several times. It makes me proud to have been on the pitch with him.”
