Italy fixing verdicts due soon

The Italian Football Federation’s disciplinary committee will consider the evidence gathered at a two-day hearing into match-fixing allegations surrounding Lazio captain Stefan Mauri, seven other players and three clubs.

Stefano Mauri has been with Lazio for five years.
Mauri faces a possible four and a half-year ban.

It is thought the verdicts and any punishments to be imposed on the people and institutions involved could be announced next week.

Prosecutor Stefano Palazzi has already called for a four-and-a-half-year ban to be imposed on Mauri, 33, who has denied any wrongdoing.

Part of the investigation into the 2011 scandal focused on Lazio's games against Genoa and Lecce. Mauri is one of eight players accused of fixing games and failing to report alleged fixing in the two fixtures, which were played in May 2011.

As the hearing concluded, a group of around 40 Lazio fans held a sit-in outside the Rome hotel in which it was being held.

If Mauri is hit with the recommended ban, it would effectively end his playing career. But earlier this month, he insisted: "I'm certain I'll be proved right in the end."
