Totti urges De Rossi to stay

Roma captain Francesco Totti has urged Daniele De Rossi to ignore offers from abroad and remain with the club.

De Rossi has been linked with a summer move to Chelsea.
De Rossi has been linked with a summer move to Chelsea.

De Rossi’s future remains in doubt with several of Europe’s top clubs, including Chelsea, having been linked with the Italy midfielder this summer.

He celebrated his 30th birthday on Wednesday with a return to training after the Confederations Cup, and Totti sent him a message asking him to give rather than receive a gift by committing his future to Roma.

• De Martinis: A tale of two transfers

“All the best for your 30th birthday Dani,” Totti told Roma Channel. “You’re getting on now and you’re almost over the hill. It would be best if you gave us a present by staying here at Roma - at least we can win something great together.”

De Rossi remains hesitant about his future after losing some support last season. He was accused by some quarters of the Roma fans of playing better for Italy than for his club during a difficult campaign.

One of the club’s biggest earners, Roma would not be averse to selling De Rossi if the right offer were to arrive as they look to reduce the wage bill, although new coach Rudi Garcia appears keen on working with the midfielder, who has made over 300 appearances for his hometown club.
