Puyol: Barca will choose right coach

Barcelona captain Carlos Puyol wants Vilanova's successor to continue the club's football philosophy

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has backed the club’s board to find a coach with the right footballing philosophy to succeed Tito Vilanova at the Camp Nou.

- Hunter: Vilanova is one of the good guys

- Marcotti: Barca's coaching options

As Barca continue their search for a coach to take over from Vilanova, who stood down last week as he continues to receive treatment for throat cancer, the 35-year-old defender said he was confident the right choice would be made.

El Mundo Deportivo says a number of managers have put themselves forward for the role since the club announced Vilanova's decision to step down on Friday.

The paper says they include Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas and former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini.

Former Barcelona B manager Luis Enrique and Argentine Gerardo Martino are the favourites for the job, according to reports in Spain.

Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta is believed to be in Buenos Aires for talks with Martino, who guided Newell's Old Boys to the Argentine Clausura in his most recent job.

Puyol told Marca: "I think the names that have been mentioned are capable of coaching this team. We all know that Zubi and the board are working hard, and we're sure they'll bring us the best coach.

"We have a certain way of playing - a philosophy. The coach that comes in will follow that line, and I'm sure Zubi and the directors are looking for a coach who can adapt to our characteristics.

"I know Martino is a very good coach, who likes the style of the club. And you all know that I have a very good relationship with Luis [Enrique] - he's one of the most accomplished names [linked with the job]."

Puyol voiced his support for 44-year-old Vilanova, saying: "It's really tough news - not just because it's happened to a coach or a colleague, but because it's an illness. The person is the most important thing.

"We remember how he talked to us, how he asked us to give everything, asked us to fight. We certainly did that, and we did it even more because of him."

Barca forward Lionel Messi, a former Newell's Old Boys youth player, last year expressed his admiration for the man who found great success at the Rosario club as both a player and coach.

“I like Tata Martino," Marca quote Messi speaking to Argentine daily Ole in August 2012. "He is a great coach and we saw in the Clausura what he did for the team, the manner in which he finished and what he accomplished. He found the team, he made them play well and everyone respects him."

Late last week, Barca president Sandro Rosell said an announcement about the new Barcelona coach could be expected within the next few days.
