Carrick may sit out United friendly

Michael Carrick could miss Manchester United’s pre-season game against Yokohama F-Marinos on Tuesday because of a groin problem.

Michael Carrick has won his fifth title since joining United from Tottenham in 2006
Carrick may not be fit to face Yokohama F-Marinos.

However, United manager David Moyes is set to use Ashley Young, Chris Smalling and Shinji Kagawa for the first time in his reign, with the trio having joined the United squad after missing the Thai and Australian legs of their current tour.

Jonny Evans and Alexander Buttner missed Saturday’s 5-1 win against an Australian A-League XI but are fit to return, meaning Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic would be the only major absentees if Carrick does feature.

"Michael Carrick has a tight groin," Moyes told a press conference in Japan, reported by United's official website. "I expect Jonny Evans to be OK and Alex Buttner to be OK. In the main, we're very close to full strength."

England internationals Young and Smalling were sidelined with ankle and foot injuries, while Kagawa was granted more time off after featuring for Japan in the Confederations Cup.

Moyes plans to use each as a substitute, adding: "The three lads probably won't start this game, but they'll definitely be involved. Certainly Young and Smalling have been training very hard before flying out here.

"Shinji has mainly been on holiday, but he has trained for a few days. We'll get them involved this week."

Moyes said his predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, had given Kagawa a glowing reference, explaining: "Sir Alex spoke about Shinji and how good a player he is.

"I've just met him today, so we're getting to know each other. I'm trying to learn Japanese, and he's trying to understand my Scottish!

"It was his first season in the Premier League last year. He's a young player, so we hope his development continues. I look forward to working with him and hopefully he has a really good season coming up."
