Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane was back in training alongside his team-mates on Wednesday for the first time since mid-May, after recovering from surgery on a meniscus tear.
Varane, 20, who made huge progress with Los Blancos last season, picked up the knee injury against Espanyol in a 1-1 draw at Cornella-El Prat.
However, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was unwilling to risk Varane, and after warming up alongside his team-mates at Valdebebas, the youngster headed inside to the gym to continue his rehabilitation programme. He was joined by Xabi Alonso and new signing Asier Illarramendi, who are also both on the sidelines.
The Liga club confirmed the news via a statement on their official website.
Ancelotti has had almost a week with his new players and their first test comes on Sunday when they travel to Bournemouth for their pre-season opener.
While Los Blancos will be without Varane for that clash, their new coach will be hoping the centre-back, who made 37 appearances for Madrid last season, will be fit and ready for the start of the new campaign.
