Beauchamp ready for van Persie challenge

The prospect of defending against one of the world's greatest strikers would have most people shaking in their boots - but not Michael Beauchamp.

The A-League All Star says he will treat Saturday's likely match-up against Manchester United's Robin van Persie as just another game.

"I'm not going to go about business any different than if I was playing a 16-year-old," Beauchamp said.

"I've still got to defend the same way and go about the positioning (the same way).

"Obviously he is a quality striker and played at the highest level for a long time now, but these are the challenges that you want to go up against week-in, week-out.

"I'm looking forward to it."

The Western Sydney Wanderers skipper said he wasn't feeling nervous about the sold-out clash at ANZ Stadium, after having spent the past five days training with a group of new teammates under coach Ange Postecoglou.

"We've worked a lot on keeping the ball moving and possession working out from the back," he said.

"It's been a great experience (getting) another coach's perspective."

Postecoglou said his players were intent on providing a good contest against the English Premier League giants.

"If we can do that, and at the end of the 90 minutes come out with credibility and respect for the A-League, then that's great," he said.

"Our main focus has been trying to get a real good structure in place so the players feel as comfortable as possible and try and play their best football."

For United, however, fitness is the top order, according to veteran Rio Ferdinand.

"Obviously we were disappointed the other day when we lost against the Thai All Stars team, but we'll be looking to make up for that on the weekend," he told a lunch at Sydney's Westin hotel.

"While it's all-important, the day the season kicks off in the Premier League (on August 17), we have to be ready - physically, mentally - to make a good defence of our title."

Ferdinand, who recently signed a one-year contract extension at United, said he had fallen in love with Sydney and promised to return one summer.

"There's a few of us already talking to our families about coming back when we get holidays," he added.
